Greenwich United is the GYCL's Competition Cheerleading Team! The United cheerleading team is made up of cheerleaders in 5th-8th grade from all 5 GYCL teams! The goal of this team is to get cheerleaders from across the town working together as one team and ultimately getting them ready to cheer at Greenwich High School.
United will hold 2 tryout sessions the first weekend in June. Your athlete will only need to attend one tryout. At tryouts, your athlete will be asked to show us their jumps, tumbling, learn and perform a dance, and learn and perform a cheer! More information regarding tryout times and location will be released soon.
United will run from June to the end of March. Practicing 1-2 times per week and competing at 3-6 competitions throughout Connecticut.
This team was started in 2012 as an Exhibition Team to perform at the Fairfield County High School Cheerleading Championships. In 2013, the coaches decide to enroll the team in competitions throughout Connecticut. It was a great decision because the Greenwich United team has won many competitions throughout Connecticut!
For more information on enrolling your athlete for the Greenwich United Competition team, please email Sidney Ambrogio or Jessica Allen gyclunited@gmail.com. All participants must have cheered on a GYCL team in current season.

Meet The Coaching Staff
Coach Sidney
Sidney Ambrogio begins her 5th season as the Director of Greenwich United. During the work day, Sidney is an administrative assistant for AP Accounting and Tax Services.
Sidney began her cheer career when she was in 3rd grade when she joined the GYCL and cheered for the Glenville Mavericks. Sidney cheered all 6 years for the Glenville Mavericks and went on to cheer at Greenwich High school as well. Sidney was also a coach for the Glenville Mavericks throughout her high school career. During high school, Sidney was a dancer for a local dance studio and traveled to Germany to dance abroad multiple times raising funds for special education schools in the town they were housed in. Sidney graduated from Greenwich High School with the class of 2017 and is excited to coach for the same program that she once cheered for. After high school, Sidney went on to get a degree in general studies. Sidney plans on going back to school for a degree in education in hopes to be a kindergarten teacher!
As a founding teammate of the original Greenwich United team in 2012, this program means the world to Sidney. Taking strides to improve this program, along side the wonderful group of coaches, Sidney has introduced new uniforms twice in those five years, brought the team to NCA Camp in the summer of 2024, brought on many new coaches to better the program and overall aimed to improve the difficulty this team was capable of! Currently, Sidney is the President of the GYCL as well as the Head Freshman Coach at Greenwich High School. She coaches 7 days a week and is truly dedicated to the sport of cheerleading.

Coach Sam
Samantha, better known as “Coach Sam” joined United in 2022 making this her third season coaching on United. Sam started coaching for the Mavericks in 2009, becoming the Maverick Director and the GYCL President in 2019. Sam has also held the position of Vice Present of the GYCL 2017-2019 and currently serves as the league treasurer, bringing her total years of service to the Mavericks and GYCL Board to 17 years!
In addition to cheer coaching, Sam has also worn the hat of “cheer mom” and sometimes “team mom” for nearly 18 years for her daughters Sidney Ambrogio and Maddie Ambrogio.
Sam’s coaching philosophy is aways Safety First! It’s not just her motto, it’s the foundation of 17 years of coaching with ZERO injuries above anything superficial.
Sam also has a full time career as a Sr. Executive Assistant at McKinsey & Company and a vital member of her husband’s BBQ Team – Greenwitch Que Co. And if there is any time left after all that, she likes to focus on her favorite things that start with the letter F: Family Time, Football, FortyNiners and of course FOOD!

Coach Katie
Katie joined the United coaching staff in the Fall of 2024. Prior to joining United, Katie was a GHS cheerleader and is the Head Coach for the Glenville Mavericks Senior Squad. Katie has been coaching for over 10 years and is on the GYCL Board of Directors.
Outside of coaching cheer (although there really is nothing outside of cheer), Katie has 3 daughters - one heading off to college in the fall of 2025, one who is the Captain of the GHS JV cheer team and one who is on Greenwich United and Glenville Mavericks. Katie loves nothing more than spending time with her daughters and coaching so many incredible kids. By day, Katie is a Vice President of Sales at Gartner as well as a part of the Board of Directors at a local Veterans Association.

Coach Lauren
Lauren began her cheer career with the North Mianus Bulldogs in 2003 as a third grader. With help from her mom as a coach, she was the first ever NM Bulldog Cheerleader to complete all six seasons. Soon after that she fell in love with the sport and became a GHS Cardinal Cheerleader and was on the “V*Cheerz” team. During her senior year, Lauren volunteered as a coach to help the first unified team at the Spirit All Star gym, Alexandrites. She guided athletes with special needs compete at various cheer competitions alongside her GHS varsity teammates. This came naturally to her since she grew up with a younger brother with special needs.
After graduating from GHS in 2013, Lauren attended Southern Connecticut State University where she was given the opportunity to join the SCSU Cheer team. While at Southern CT, she was able to compete at the NCA College National Championship in Daytona, Florida her freshman year. Shortly after her freshman year, Lauren transferred to the University of Rhode Island. Lauren is a proud alum of URI where she earned a degree in both Graphic Design and Communication Studies.
Although Lauren didn’t continue cheer at URI, she had a feeling she would come back to where she started, with GYCL. While being an athlete ended for her, becoming a coach just began. With over 20 years of experience in both sideline & competitive cheer, Lauren is passionate about inspiring young athletes to achieve their goals.
Outside of coaching, Lauren works for North Mill Equipment Finance on the Sales & Marketing team in Norwalk. When she has time off, she loves to go to the beach (especially Tod’s Point) and spend time with her friends & family.
Lauren is excited to continue her coaching journey with Greenwich United, guiding young athletes in their cheerleading endeavors and helping them develop their cheer skills as well as lifelong skills. This has become a full circle moment for Lauren, and she can't wait to see what this amazing team can do!
